MONROVIA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Liberian President George Weah on Tuesday ordered the foreign ministry to immediately halt the issuance of the country's diplomatic passports, the Executive Mansion said.
Weah also ordered a probe and full report detailing a review of how Liberian diplomatic passports are issued, the Executive Mansion said in a statement.
The order followed the recent arrest of Sheikh Bassirou Kante, a leading Liberian businessman widely known in the country as Royal Gold, by the U.S. authorities.
Kante, who was allegedly in possession of a Liberian diplomatic passport, was nabbed at his home in the U.S. on April 20 for offenses bordering on money laundering conspiracy.
The statement said issuance of that category of passport would henceforth be strictly approved by the Liberian president.
