KAMPALA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Nicholas Natuhereza, head coach of the Uganda national women's basketball team, expressed confidence that his squad will perform well at the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket.
Twelve teams will compete in the tournament, scheduled to take place in Cote d'Ivoire from July 25 to August 3.
Speaking to Xinhua after announcing his provisional squad, Natuhereza said the team is well-balanced, combining experienced players with young talent.
"We made it through the qualifiers and have now strengthened the team. We have what it takes to compete well in Cote d'Ivoire," said Natuhereza.
Led by captain Jane Asinde, who played for Chinese club Henan Phoenix during the 2024-2025 season, Uganda was drawn into Group C alongside Senegal and Guinea.
"We have been updating the roster since the qualifiers and aim to have a stronger team than at the last AfroBasket. We need to train together as a team," Natuhereza added.
The top four finishers at AfroBasket will qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
Nigeria will enter the tournament as four-time defending champions, having defeated Senegal in the final of the last edition held in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2023.
